Media Advisory – Upcoming 2002 Fundraising Events
for Christmas Exchange
September 12, 2002
(Ottawa, ON)
Santa Claus is Coming to Town
Christmas is just around the corner for the people at the Christmas Exchange,
who are busy gearing up for the 2002 holiday season. Last year, the Exchange
helped over 25,000 people in the Ottawa area, 11,800 under the age of 18. We
expect the numbers of people needing help will be even greater this year, said
Bill Wyman the new board chair of the Christmas Exchange. We are estimating
at this point that we need to raise at least $510,000 to be able to help everyone. Jim
Watson, President
& CEO of the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC), and former mayor
of Ottawa, is serving as Campaign Chair for the second year. The other
members of the volunteer board of directors are: Robin Jackson, Vice-President;
Mary Kay Hepburn, Treasurer; Catherine Latham, Secretary; Bonnie Gray,
Past President; Philip Bott, Gay Cook, Timothy Grieve, Nancy Howlett,
Alan Knoll, David Martin, Thérèse Moriarty, and Hugh Trueman.
An Event for the Non-Athletic Athlete
You dont have to be a marathon runner to join in the fun of this charity
fundraising event. At last there is a sporting event that even an armchair athlete
can compete in that is both fun and for a good cause. The LazyMan Triathlon,
sponsored by Sports Radio 1200 THE TEAM, in support of the Christmas Exchange,
will take place Saturday, September 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Teams of
four will compete in bowling, simulation golf and pool. Prizes will be awarded
to first, second and third place winners, as well as for team spirit. For the
cost of registration, participants will receive transportation between activity
venues, plus lunch and dinner. You can register online at www.christmas-exchange.com,
or by phoning Laura at 226-6434 ext. 226.
Get a Head Start on Your Thanksgiving Baking
For the second year, Ottawas own Jim Watson will be hosting Ottawas
Biggest Bake Sale, Saturday, September 28, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Ottawa
City Hall. Sponsored by Swiss Pastries, Ottawa Citizen, and Royal Bank Financial
Group, the bake sale will feature goodies from some of the best bakeries in Ottawa,
along with home baking from area churches. One of the highlights of this years
event will be a live demonstration of the art of professional cake decorating
put on by Swiss Pastries and Cordon Bleu. Parking in that area of the city is
free on Saturdays, so plan to attend and make your holiday baking easy.
