In his President's Report, David Martin spoke about how important it is for an organization to stay rooted in its mission and values, as well as the dependence of an organization on the generosity of its sponsors, patrons, donors and above all, its volunteers.

Executive Director Marilyn Matheson talked numbers, reporting that the face value of the food vouchers for families of two and more was increased in 2007.  Revenue was up over the previous year as well as the number of people who received direct assistance, from 22,900 in 2006 to 23,793 in 2007. The number of children helped increased from 10,502 to 10,967 and the number of seniors from 1,804 to 1,883.  Through the use of the centralized database, the Exchange coordinated services for an additional 3,528 families, and 11,305 children were referred to The Salvation Army Toy Centre.  Thanks to generous donations from many individuals and organizations, the Christmas Exchange was able to meet all of its obligations in 2007 without having to put out an emergency appeal through the media for more funds.

Plaques were awarded to representatives from many of our donors and supporters in recognition of their hard work and generosity. Three outgoing board members, David Rattray, Sean Caulfeild and Charles Goddard, were also honoured for their work with the Exchange, and a special thank you given to last year's Campaign Chair, A-Channel News Anchor Sandra Blaikie.

Neighbour's You've Helped
Meet some of the people the Christmas Exchange helped last December.

Walter*
After giving birth to her first child last year, Walter's wife fell ill and was unable to work. Walter himself was also unable to work, as he was forced to stay at home and care for his wife and young daughter. The family lived on a disability cheque, but despite this, only had to visit the food bank once in 2007, something Walter is quite proud of. In a thank you letter written to the Christmas Exchange Walter wrote, "I am happy, but you always want a little more money for food and presents for Christmas." Thanks to a food voucher received from the Christmas Exchange, Walter was able to buy a little extra for his wife and daughter for Christmas. "we will definitely have a great Christmas." Said Walter, "[Christmas Exchange] made this Ottawa family feel very lucky and also gave a little girl the Christmas she deserves. you guys gave us the best gift of all."

Lucy*
Following a traumatic car accident four years ago Lucy was depressed and unable to work. Although she is currently working towards self employment through sewing and knitting, Lucy often doesn't have enough to make ends meet.  Last Christmas Lucy received a food hamper from Christmas Exchange and was able to have an enjoyable holiday meal which she shared with her elderly neighbour who suffers from muscular degeneration, and the woman's mentally ill son. "Thank you so much for the work you do." Writes Lucy, "hopefully I will be in a position in the future to brighten someone else's holiday."
